Chillout Track Of The Day “To Face The Truth” Pet Shop Boys

I recently had a chat online with @weeblade about @petshopboys and it made me think of this song. It was never released as a single, but was on their Behaviour album from 1990. This is typical of that era of the PSBs, it’s moody, and having been recorded on analog synths, it gives off that warmth.

Lyrically it’s a little “grown up”, the song talks about having to face the truth of an unrequited love from a relationship that’s ended, it’s a little more than teen angst. It’s at this point that the writer wants to give up because of the pain of having to chase around with no return.
“You know it hurts me when you lie,
Sometimes it even makes me cry,
If you don’t believe what I have said,
Take a look my eyes are red.”

The melody for this verse just warms my heart for some reason, it’s just one of those things that sticks with you.

Musically, this is slow, the bassline pulses, over an 808 pattern, there are synth pads over an electric piano, I’m going out on a limb to say it’s a DX7 e.piano patch. In the chorus there’s a synth sound that’s repeated it sounds like a heavy processed organ. There are also synth strings mixed with live strings that come in later to lift the track, over the pained vocals… this is definitely one of my favourite @petshopboys deep cuts. I remember playing this a LOT when I first got the tape in 1990, and I still pull it out of the archives from time to time. Thanks Louise for the memory!
