Oh my word. On first hearing this track I thought it was a long forgotten track from the 60s left in the archives of some studio in Memphis. The vocals are rough, and full of blues and soul, Ben l’Oncle Soul’s voice does not show his 41 years of age he sings with a power and experience that comes from at least 20 years, 2 failed marriages, a decade in prison, your kids hating you and a debt to the taxman higher than Snoop Dogg on a good day. In other words, he carries this off perfectly.
The drums and bass are retro in sound, giving me the Stax kind of feel, I love that drum sound! Add to that the oohs that sound gorgeous – they’ve got a gospel flavour to them that really touches you. Put flutes along with a piano and a guitar giving off tremolo vibes then you’ve nailed it.
