Congratulations on the release of ‘bedtime stories mp3’ how does it feel?
Thank you! It feels really great. I am proud to have completed a cohesive and full body of work. It’s also really exciting to see the way people have been responding to it.
It’s a seven track project with an interesting backstory tell us about it.
“bedtime stories mp3” is a bilingual, multimedia EP that blends genres and cultural influences. Each song is accompanied by an original story, inspired by the bedtime tales I grew up with, but now reimgianed as an adult. You can visit the full experience by visiting www.bedtimestoriesmp3.com !
What’s your favourite track from it?
This is a hard one because I don’t think I have a favorite! I love each track for different reasons. “misirlou” is the “banger” of the EP, and it’s always so fun to play it. I really love “1001” because it has such a unique sound, and I enjoyed writing and singing in Mandarin. “intuition” and “meant to be” were originally one track I made four years ago, but I reworked them this year for the EP, so they hold a special place in my heart.
You’re a singer songwriter based in LA how did it all begin for you?
I was born and raised in Shanghai, and I first came to the U.S. by myself for high school. My family actually moved to LA when I started college, so now I consider this beautiful city home. When I first came here, I didn’t think it was possible for me to pursue a music career… because this was before I really saw Asian faces in the industry here. But now, surrounded by so many talented and diverse friends, I feel inspired and encouraged to pursue this creative path.
What did you listen to growing up?
When I first started listening to music, it was a lot of “Rolling Stone’s 100 Albums to Listen to Before You Die.” That, and High School Musical soundtracks. (This movie changed my life because if I wasn’t obsessed with HSM I don’t think I would want to learn English, nor would I want to come to the U.S. for high school!) Some of my favorite musicians growing up include Michael Jackson, Coldplay, The Black Keys, Second-Handed Rose (二手玫瑰).
This project explores childhood memories with adult experiences, you grew up in Shanghai – what’s your favourite memory of living there?
I really miss roaming around the city at night with my friends. Shanghai is such a metropolitan city, but since I went to local, public boarding schools, I only really got to explore the city during the weekends. These city nights were magical.
The EP is called Bedtime Stories what was your favourite bedtime story as a child?
I think it would probably be “Alice in Wonderland.” I just love a story with a crazy world creation!
What are you listening to at the moment?
Currently on repeat… Doechii, Saya Grey, _BY.ALEXANDER, 070 Shake
What are you looking forward to in 2025?
My next project! And some shows coming up. The next project I’m working on is conceptually a continuation of “bedtime stories mp3” in many ways—it will be about dreams. I also have some exciting collabs down the line.
