Single Review: “Sunlight To My Soul” – Angelique Kidjo

An extraordinary thing happened yesterday. I met a couple from South Africa and we talked about music. Complete strangers. But the thing that connected us was that I love Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and the late great singers Miriam Makeba and Lionel Petersen. We talked about their impact and for just a brief moment we sang Malaika together. It was heartwarming. I feel I made a connection with them and that’s what music is about. @baxter_pr sent me this track and it’s…
Stunning.

Angelique didn’t come alone, this is a song by @dianewarren I can list her work and you will be blown away by how much her music has impacted the world over and over again. This combines gospel harmonies, traditional African percussion, a slick guitar riff that’s really understated… the thing that hit me was the chorus, it’s so simple, but it’s so effective – and also when the choir come in fully the second time round, it just puts a big smile on my face. Wow! You can’t help but what want to sing along and dance… watch out for the clapping because boy you will want to raise your hands in praise…

Having a gospel music background myself this speaks to me physically and spiritually. It’s a love song, but then it just enriches with that flavour… Listen out for the bridge at 2:04, then the harmony invasion at 2:24!

It had me shouting!
