Single Review: “That’ll Be The Day” – Buddy Holly

As tomorrow is 63 years since Buddy Holly, along with Richie Havens and The Big Bopper died tragically in a plane crash I thought I’d commemorate this with my favourite Buddy Holly song.

I have memories of jamming this on the piano with my friend Simon and him singing and playing on a battered acoustic guitar. Just for fun. It was 1992, and I was still in my synth phase going into my singer/songwriter phase.

This song was proper rock n roll with blues but crossed over into pop as well – Buddy’s vocal adlibs, with the ooh oohs in a falsetto range. It’s a song guaranteed to make you dance because it… swings. And such a catchy chorus. This song holds so many memories for me, and I think it will live on for years to come.
