Single Review: “Flutter” – Amelia McFall

Just piano and vocals? Yeah you got me from the moment this song started. This is a stunning ballad which shows off Amelia’s vocal abilities, it’s soulful but also has jazz elements too. Her voice is so rich and warm on this, especially when she sings in her lower range. My favourite bit though, is at 1:06, where Amelia’s voice floats over a really gorgeous chord progression in the chorus. It’s two chords played chromatically. Her voice just touches you. A goosebump moment for sure.

The  overall arrangement on the piano is so simple and it just lets Amelia do her thing beautifully, like I said at the beginning of this, just piano and vocals is so effective. There are no arpeggios just lovely chords and then Amelia harmonises over it with oohs over the top

It’s the simplicity that gets you.

I love this song. It’s that simple.

I have to shout out Alex Hollingsworth here. Great piano performance and production as well as mastering by sonic alchemist Moegli.

Inspired by her free-spirited aunt, Amelia McFall developed her musical talents in Montreal, Canada. She earned multiple Distinctions from the Royal Conservatory for classical piano and pursued Jazz vocal studies at Concordia University from 2011 to
2017, mentored by Jazz singer Jeri Brown.

Now London, UK-based, Amelia McFall made her move across the pond in 2018 in order to network and pursue her music. Rooted in, and deeply influenced by Blues, Old Soul, Folk, Gospel and Jazz. She has a passion for simple yet complex poetic settings. Her songwriting and lyrics are unguardedly open and heartfelt, often exploring melancholic and nostalgic scenes. Accompanied by a voice that has been described as “smoky, sultry” it is also versatile, powerful, soulful, rich, buttery and expressive.

Amelia has been paving her way through the London music scene and is steadily on the rise.
2023 has been a performance filled year. Notable performances include being featured as an up and coming act at McKNasty’s “FireBall Sessions” and being invited to open for Jessie Malcolm at the beautiful Sheriff Center. In addition, Amelia was invited as a support for Blakey’s much-anticipated first headline show in London, UK on November 29th, 2023 at the Hackney Social.

A recent highlight, sharing the stage in a duet with Ty Taylor of the American Rhythm and Blues Band, Vintage Trouble, at the Electric Brixton in August.

In addition to pursuing her own music career, Amelia is the creator and host of “Top Floor Tones”. A series of intimate music events facilitating and creating a platform for up and coming talent.
These events have enabled Amelia to network and meet an array of creatives and fellow musicians. In the process, she has developed relationships and worked closely with i.am.afiya and SheisMalcolm, while also gaining tremendous support for her craft from the likes of Henry Grace, Deacon and Blakey, amongst others.

Since her 2015 release of “Another You,” Amelia’s latest single, “Flutter,” is a precursor to her upcoming EP, slated for mid-2024.
