On 4th May 1996 this song was George Michael’s 7th UK no. 1 starting a three week run at the top of the chart and it was the second of six tracks taken from his Older album.
First of all I can’t believe it’s 30 years since this track went to No.1. It’s wild to think how quickly time can pass. This track still has that slick production associated with Older, the album from which this track comes from, a really mature sound, George’s vocals sitting right there, and the genius use of Forget Me Nots by Patrice Rushen for the outro just makes this even more special. I know there were blood sweat and tears to make this happen, and my hats off to Johnny Douglas for pulling it off.
You’ve got synths pulsing, a horn section, an overall futuristic sound that has a vintage edge, and seems to cross decades in its approach. I remember back in 1996 this was in constant rotation on MTV – it was also a good summer!
