Single Review: “(They Say It’s Like) Riding A Bike” – Dan Whitehouse X Jasmine Gardosi

Well, this is quite a mixture! This combines spoken word, with indie rock sensibilities but then you’ve got a spoken word element too and a little bit of hip hop too.

This is a track that has an infectious hook, and it caught my attention immediately, it’s almost like a self help tape wrapped up in a TEDtalk, this is kind of evidenced in the second verse.

Everyone knows that in order to deliver a bit of motivation you start off with a question that challenges people’s minds.

Do you ever forget how to synchronise your feet?

That right there is the question.

Its the pace of life, loose your rhythm and winding round the obstacles,

The pit falls, the hard bends

You see where the problem lies.

Yes, the wheels go round and round but so does our luck

Sometimes.. it sucks!

You identify the problem, diagnose it, and then your mind as a human decides to apply the solution.

Fall down, dust off, get up, push on

Fall down, dust off, get up, push on

Fall down, dust off, get up, push on

Fall down, dust off, get up, push on

The chorus brings the self doubt:

Ridin’ a bike, they say it’s like riding’ a bike

But if its like ridin’ a bike.. why have I forgotten?

How to

Ride a bike, they say it’s like ridin’ a bike

But if it’s like ridin’ a bike then why have I forgotten?

But the little voice, the little Yoda on your shoulder tells you that you can do this..

This is not a linear path, you are not going backwards,

Life works in circles, you are still right on track

No, we fear crashing in the same old patterns and you will cycle through those places again

But have faith in how far you’ve come, between now and then

Mistake, learn, feel it burn

Mistake learn, feel it return

The baggage comes back around

Trust, that you’ll come round to, things always do

You’re crumpled bike proves that things can move in cycles, at the same time as move on through

Full disclosure, I never learned to ride a bike, it was never my thing, I was too busy reading and making music, but this makes sense in so many different ways.

Dan Whitehouse and Jasmine Gardosi share the vocals on this giving it different perspectives, and it works out brilliantly as a concept.
