Track Of The Day – “Gut Punch” – Nick Jonas

This track has caused quite a stir on its release, I went through the usual socials on the 1st January to find what’s going on and Jonas fans everywhere have really got behind this one, and with good reason.

This is a pop rock track with much of the energy packed in the vocals, which is what drew me to this song in the first place.

The lyrics really do hit home, referencing Phil for chats – as in Doctor Phil the TV psychologist?

Yes, we in the UK are aware of him.

This song could be looking at the trappings of celebrity:

“When the hell did I start trying to be perfect?
And people-pleasing, is it ever really worth it?
Fake-smiling just to pass the time
It’s the only way I’ve been getting by
Looked at myself and I can’t even recognize
Who I am behind those eyes, one big disguise.”

You can really feel it in this song, that it’s a way of putting down how he REALLY feels even though you’re surrounded by an adoring fandom it can be lonely.

Instrumental wise, this is sparse, just a piano, synths, a big percussive hit that feels like a mix between a timpani and concert tom. It’s very dramatic and that’s probably what they were going for.
