Single Review: “Away From Here” – Speech Debelle X Baby Sol

Speech Debelle just dropped a beauty of an album, “Sunday Dinner On A Monday” and one of my favourite tracks on it is this one for many reasons.

The warped record playing the chords sets the tone, especially with the crackle. The beat drops in borrowing from afrobeat with the rimshot, kick and shakers.

It’s a fab groove!

Speech Dabelle comes in with a chilled out rap, describing a perfect break from the norm – talking about what a perfect holiday would look like  on a hot island somewhere…

“I want sunset, red and yellow,

I want to chow down

With some merlot,

I want to nap in the middle of day (Afternoon naps are the best! I can’t lie.)

There’s a reference to how this is good for mental health, and this is true – sometimes you just need to take it easy and relax.

Baby Sol adds some sparkle to this track – I’ve been a fan of hers since she collaborated with Lazy Habits with a track that still kills me… she brings great smooth vocals to this adding jazz tinges and making this track a beautiful package.

Speech Debelle is a winner of the Mercury Music Award from 2009, for her debut album “Speech Therapy”,  this track comes from her third album.

I love the title.

“Sunday Dinner On A Monday” – I can do that.
