Track Of The Day: Anything For You – Gloria Estefan And The Miami Sound Machine

I chose this song because in the 1990s when I was at 6th Form we used to spice up the faculty meetings by adding music to it – I’d play the piano for when people came in and then one of my friends would sing, and this is one of our favourites.

Why do I like this song? Well, listen to the melody. It’s heartbreaking matching the lyrics.

Anything for you though you’re not here,
Since you said we’re through,
It seems like years,
Time keeps dragging on and on,
And forever’s been and gone,
Still I can’t figure what went wrong.

You’re drawn in, and even if you don’t feel the sentiment you’re in that world.

Gloria’s voice has been something that’s stuck with me for a long time, even when she’s singing full on fast paced songs or ballads like this she will crush it and give it her all.

On a personal note, she helped me to reconnect with a song that I hadn’t heard since I was 6 years old. Back then obviously there was no such thing as Shazam, or Spotify but I just remember hearing this one piece of music -Cuandoo Sali De Cuba and falling in love with it. She had a musical out a few years ago, and on the soundtrack this song was on there in fact it’s the second track on the album. I had that feeling of being connected to a long lost friend through this song, and I had to go looking for the original version now I knew what it was called. The version I knew was by The Sandpipers and I tweeted her about it, feeling very emotional – she was very kind about it, and even told me that it was that version that she’d heard first.

In essence, it felt like things had come full circle.

Feliz cumpleaños Gloria. Dios la bendiga.
