Single Review: “Back To Black” – The Zutons

This is the cover of a classic Amy Winehouse song I never knew I needed. The connection between The Zutons and Amy Winehouse is a pretty cool one given that she turned an already banging track of theirs called “Valerie” into arguably one of the best cover versions ever. Now The Zutons are back with a take on her track, and taking out the jazz/blues and dark elements they’ve replaced it with some a straight no swing beat giving it a bit of a drum n bass vibe but with live instruments – the guitars are there, so are the live drums, piano and bass. Abi Harding takes lead on this and she keeps the tone of heartbreak in the song with her vocals, and I feel it, it doesn’t take away from the pain that you hear in Amy’s voice in the original. Abi does a great job on this..

My favourite part of this song is when the band change the tempo at 2:34 bringing in a sax solo… one more time around the chorus to finish and it made me hit the play button again.

Brilliant.

This was recorded for the BBC Live Lounge (I love their albums!) and is available on all streaming platforms.

Excuse me while I go listen again.
