Single Review: “Dream On” – Aerosmith

I’m gutted to hear about Steven Tyler’s decision to retire.

It’s epic. The vocals at the point that I’ve picked where he goes full on banshee wail gives me goosebumps! Admittedly the first time I heard this song was when Eminem sampled it for “Sing” but when I went back and listened to the original it blew me away. Steven Tyler’s vocal prowess is out there! Joined by Joe Perry‘s beautiful guitar work in the intro you recognise this immediately, add to that the signature big drums from Joey Kramer which dip in and out not taking anything away from the song.. what you think are strings is actually a mellotron giving it that warm dark feel and to that the harpsichord and you have an instant classic….

The chorus always stays with me..:

Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear
Sing with me, if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away
Yeah, sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear
Sing with me, if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away.

This is from their album released in 1973, and it’s part of an era of epic rock songs, whether it’s a power ballad or a stomping rock song.
