Single Review: “Evergreen Time” – Erica Jean

This one starts off with a warped electric piano playing a progression that sounds like it’s been passed through old tape.. great effect! Add to it finger snaps that have a ping pong delay on it.. it gives it a real blues/soul vibe! Add strings to it then you’re away. This has such a summery vibe to it, the chord change reminds me a little bit of 70s R&B, I get the feeling that Erica Jean has been influenced a little bit by Minnie Riperton – there’s a good reason for that comparison and I’ll come back to that.

This song takes you on a bit of a journey, reflecting on what seems like a holiday romance – the cover of the single kind of reinforces this because there’s a couple n the beach in the sunset.

What I really want to talk about is Erica’s voice.

This is on a slow burn like she’s warming up, on each change in the song, and then she absolutely blows my mind with one thing and that’s what sold me on this song.

Is that…

Is she..?

No.

No way.

Whistle pitch?

Possibly…

What a tune.

Erica Jean is a singer songwriter from the Midlands and her Spotify says she’s probably dressed in pink and being weird in public.

I can relate to that.
