Single Review: “Waking Up” – Echo Northstar

This track is moody, a piano drenched in reverb, giving it a really dark element to it in the part from 1:04, there are no lyrics at this point just humming and vocalising. This is how I’d visualise waking up in the morning, especially on a cold Sunday morning like we had today.

The one thing I want listeners to pay attention to is the timing it’s a triplet, and the way the backing vocals are interwoven it feels like that state of waking up where you’re still in the dream and starting to come out of it. I’m pretty sure there’s a scientific term for it. But this for me carries the influences of Kate Bush and Pink Floyd and that’s not a bad thing.

Echo Northstar is an Irish artist creating sounds from a sleepy southeast seaside village and is currently in final stages of production on his debut ep ‘things I wish I could say’.

Last summer, following the success of the 80s gothic dream pop of ‘silent fears’, Echo touted a suitcase of songs on a UK & European tour at the invite of LA shoegaze band julie playing the Moth Club, London, YES Manchester, Artheater, Cologne and legendary King Tuts, Glasgow.
In November, Echo played his debut Irish show as support for Cruel Sister at the Grand Social, Dublin. A hometown show is on track for early spring.
