In honour of Debbie Harry’s 80th birthday, I thought I’d pull one of my favourite tracks from my childhood. This was always on the radio, and still remains a classic in my ears. I only discovered recently through listening to the album version that there was an electronic drum track at the beginning it sounds like a bossa nova pattern slightly sped up. It happens in the intro and runs all the way through almost hidden by the other instruments but it’s so effective. It came out in the era of disco – you can tell this by that straight down the line bass, over the drums and synths… I wonder what Georgio Moroder thinks of this track because I can bet they took their influences from I Feel Love to get here. Debbie’s voice is high and strong on this, singing about a love she once had that had a heart of glass. The melody is a perfect example of a pop song, it’s catchy all the way through you could hum a line and it’s easily identifiable.
This song was released in 1978, and was a no.1 hit in several countries including the UK and USA.
