Jaelee has been on my radar for a very long time having been part of the top level function band The Black Hat Band who absolutely kill it live anyway…
She’s got a ridiculous vocal range that is shown off really well here, her new single. As usual, the production standard is high – I’m comparing this to a previous single that I’ve been playing a lot, “Sunday Calling”.
Jaelee’s vocals range from full on gospel, to musical theatre and a tinge of opera. She sings of profound loss with a heartbreak that I can’t even begin to measure but I’m sure she’s reaching into a deep place within to convey this.
Her lyrics here are gorgeous – “Only an angel relies alone, only an angel can get me home.”
Lovely. Everytime she releases something it makes me pause and think.
Jaelee like myself is a south Londoner. She is the daughter of Millie Small, who had a major hit with “My Boy Lollipop”. She has written down her collection of roaming thoughts, short stories and soulful vocal harmony drenched monologues. Painting a picture of her memories through catchy choruses and memorable melodies containing personal influences ranging from the well played vinyls of The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd and The Who to Nelly Furtado, Emeli Sandé and Haim. A wide ‘Mixtape of Emotion’ resulting in a delightful blend of emotive pop and soulful rock. With such diverse influences, her music transcends genres and has a unique sound and feel which is instantly recognisable, leaving a lasting impression.
The impressive vocal arrangements add an extra level of sophistication to her songwriting. Jaelee’s musical journey guides the listener through the process of her self-discovery and the search for her own identity. Maybe we find out who she is.
