Fresh Faves: Batch 605

ANNA BLAISE – We’ll Be King

Anna Blaise is a newcomer to fresh on the net and brings a down tempo synth track with an ethereal vocals. This also appears to be her debut single! In any case double congratulations on making the faves as well as her debut!

This starts out with a warped piano sound, over electronic drums that have a slight delay on the snare, the chords on piano are joined by synth pads as well as bells to flesh it out.

These words made me pause for a moment:

What if I told you I was borrowed and broken

Would you save me?

The vulnerability in this lyric alone is raw!

So who’s Anna Blaise? She’s a singer songwriter from Darlington, this was created alongside Lisbon-based guitarist and producer Miguel Nicolau.

AUSTELWHITE LINEN

It seems that the faves this week are dominated by chilled vibes and there’s nothing wrong with that. This next one is an acoustic led track by returning fresh fave AUSTEL, who comes to us with a track that is in 3/4 and accompanied with just an acoustic guitar and what sounds like a synth towards the end. The thing that got me with this particular track was her soaring vocals it’s emotional and having read the story about what it’s about this is understandable. This song is about acceptance at its core, and this is further illustrated by the fact that the outro is various friends saying I love you.

This also features field recordings from Austel’s parents’ garden in Devon and features the sound of bees and birdsong.

I do like a good field recording!

Austel is a London based folk singer songwriter born in Devon, and has a new album on the way called Mirror To Mine out on 5th June 2026.

CAT ROSE – Nothing Ever Happens Here

CAT ROSE makes a welcome return to the faves with a track that’s piano led, very simple progression and a very simple song but when the strings come in that’s when you know you have something special here. The way that this is approached overall is pretty cool, Cat adds layers to it then strips it away, the strings really build it up emotionally and there’s even a violin solo in the mix. It’s bare, reflecting the storytelling part of the song so not one thing dominates the song.

I could see this being included in a tv show!

Cat Rose is a singer songwriter from Plymouth, she is affiliated with the Barbican Theatre Rebels Program and is funded by Youth Music.

EMILY MERCER – Flatlining

What I like about this one is the fact there’s a lot of different rhythms going on, there’s an off beat groove, not to mention Emily Mercer’s soulful vocals to go on top. This combines soul with a little sprinkle of jazz, this sounds like it could have been recorded on tape giving it that warped feel, especially on that piano. I like that slightly detuned feel to it.

This lyric made me think of life imitating art:

Made my bed, I’m sleeping in it
Find another song
It’s a perfect mirror image
And that kind of symmetry can’t be wrong

Emily Mercer last made the faves in March 2025, she’s a singer songwriter from Manchester, originally from the Suffolk coast, she writes songs for the people who are still thinking about things they said in 2016.

I feel seen.

FLOE BROWN – Through Your Veins

This is pure indie pop, and this is a good thing! You’ve got chugging guitars, great backbeat and a solid vocal but then this is to be expected of Floe Brown another newcomer to FOTN and indeed the faves. This track has a real rock edge to it but at the same time it pulls things back a little to let Floe’s voice sit comfortably in there. This song contains a compulsion to make you want to turn it all the way up to 11 and play air guitar on it loud, it’s a track that you could easily pop on your streaming platform of choice and head down to the coast it’s got that summery feel to it.

Floe is from London, a BRIT school student who self produces her music.

She’s also my one to watch.

MAMAS GUN – Joy

Straight out of the box, this track is my track of the week! Mamas Gun consistently make track that are bangers and they show no signs of giving up that trend. This blends old school soul sensibilities along with modern day tempos, loving the sound of the electric piano on this… Makes me feel so fuzzy inside!

There’s also a bit of a gospel flavour on the word joy in the chorus…

Lyrically this is about meeting someone that gives you that nice warmth that makes you float on clouds, the one where your insides go to mushy peas every time you see or hear from them – I can totally identify with this right now at this stage of my life – that feeling where it makes you feel like a 14 year old all over again and meeting that summer love that you can’t wait to see again when you have to go home. It’s a different situation for me right now it’s not 1989 anymore…

I think I’ve given away too much!

Anyway this track gives me all of the feels and it certainly was a hit with the mods and our dear readers alike.

Mamas Gun are London based, and this is the closing track from their album DIG! which came out on 10th April.

MT JONES – I Don’t Understand

Another retro track in the faves, this time from MT Jones, combining a swung disco groove with strings, this could be late 70s era Motown with this kind of thing. The clean guitar tone at the beginning sets the tone for this, as well as that groovy bass! Add to that the string section that could have come from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

The vocals are in very much in keeping with the era, falsetto, but years of hard living, a bad smoking habit and three bitter divorces can give you that aesthetic but I doubt MT Jones’s private life could match that.

For this reason this track gets my chef’s kiss.

MT Jones is a Liverpudlian soul singer this is from his album Joy which came out in March this year, and it’s the opening track.

NX Panther – Shabana

Fellow mod and friend NX Panther comes to the table with a chilled out track that’s short and sweet at 2:06, built around a piano, trap beat, sub 808 bass, and ethereal synths. On this track she talks about her heritage, and uses in the title that is gorgeous in its definition – according to google Shabana (شَبانہ) is a feminine given name of Persian/Urdu origin meaning belonging to the night,” “nightfall,” or “young lady,” often conveying beauty and serenity. Derived from the Persian word shab (night), it refers to anything associated with the night, such as nocturnal beauty.

With her usual regal grace, NX Panther approaches this with eloquence, and clear diction and nails the track for all to hear – in other words easily accessible.

NX Panther and I have something special cooking by the way. I’ll say no more than that!

WALLY – Embrace You

There is some confusion as to whether Wally is called Wally or Thomas Walliker so I’ll let you figure that one out for yourself. This is a new track from Thomas Walliker, lo-fi vibes are the order of the day, the track glitches along while a piano is played muted. The vocals are layered and in an octave with no harmonies but then this track doesn’t need it.

I like the laidback feel to it, and it suits the delivery of the vocal. It’s minimalistic and there’s not much that you can really do other than just have your ears drawn to it.

This is a vibe!
