Single Review: “No Future” – The Great Leslie

The Great Leslie are back with a track that’s an absolute stomper! Big rock drums that swing on the toms, big vocals, big crunchy guitars… well what do you expect from the great Leslie? A lot and then some. This is a message with several layers – let’s start with the cover – a picture of children looking on as they watch a house being burnt to the ground despite efforts to save it by the fire service – this could be seen as their future going up in flames, given the way the world is right now. Lyrically this goes for the jugular with barbs at having no money to clothe yourself (Take the shirt off my back/As I have got nothing left), Covid and possibly a nod to mpox (A plague on all our houses/Not like the one we just had) a jab at being young and not being able to afford to buy your own house… it goes on and on!

Musically, the song begins with toms that have a little bit of a swing to it, with the guitars come in with stabs over the top, going from that to chugs in the main verse, it’s worth noting that your ear is drawn to the lead guitar simulating an alarm. There’s percussion in here too, they even go half time in rhythm. Towards the end it starts to pick up tempo- sneaky but effective! Mixed at Abbey Road, this gives the track the shine it didn’t know it needed. This is the first track from their forthcoming EP “Repeat Repeat Repeat”. I certainly have to get this review done! Well done lads.
