What I like about this song is its ability to switch from steady paced dance floor banger to a jazzy ballad in the blink of an eye. This starts off with a lovely glassy fender Rhodes, the shakers fade up and then the drum beat comes in at 0:20, giving that Afrobeat vibe. The chord progression over this is tasty! The rhythmic change at at 0:58 is sudden and so is the addition of strings – it’s like a ballad right in the middle of the song… it’s like a b section, and I like the creative thinking here.. it’s not your run of the mill arrangement. The lyrics pose a challenge – are you being true? Are you being true to your heart? Or just meeting others’ expectations? It’s like the song is showing you two sides of a coin, and the single art reinforces this for me…
The more I listen to this I want to go back and listen to it and find more that I didn’t hear the first time!
