Today is the Mercury Music Awards and they are being hosted at @abbeyroadstudios @freshonthenet asked a question on his fabulous #nowplaying show on @bbc6music – what album in the past got nominated but never won? Naturally there are so many, but one I didn’t realise was nominated when looking for my favourite was Take That’s “Everything Changes” album. Let’s take a step back in time here. I remember hearing about Take That back in early 1991, my friend Anne-Marie sent me a tape, and it was the first album. I really enjoyed it being a big pop music fan anyway but the standout track for me was “Why Can’t I Wake Up With You?” I still remember the first time I heard it, the postman had been, it was a miserable day in February and I’d just got my new stereo, we’d also just moved house. I remember it being a great ballad Gary’s voice just nailing the whole thing from top to bottom. Atmospheric synths, very chilled out… this was way before the big hits dropped but it had the tracks on there. A million love songs, could it be magic… but this was my favourite.
Let’s fast forward a little bit. Smash Hits was buzzing because Take That were releasing their new album, they were on the party tour, and they were pretty much on top of the world…
Then everything changed for me. They drop this little beauty, a completely remixed version! A hip hop beat with horn stabs and guitar line, a count in spoken in Spanish and vocals redone – this is epic! The remix was done by @steve.jervier Paul Jervier and Jonathan Wales and was to me a job well done! They did four tracks on the album anyway, and in my opinion a great choice for production. The vibe on this track could be said to be very swing beat – it isn’t – but the soulful vocals, the layers, the reimagining makes it stand out as its own track in fact I could even go as far as to say I prefer the remix…. After all this time I still dig this one out of the archives to reminisce.
