Single Review: “Do-Re-Mi” – Julie Andrews

This has got to be an ear worm for the ages. Anyone who’s seen “The Sound Of Music” will know this straight away. In honour of Dame Julie Andrews’ 89th birthday on 1st October I thought I’d choose this as my track of the day. The melody is so simple, and it’s a great way to teach people about the sol-fah scale an alternative to the lettered scale.

The melody is upbeat, and the tempo is fast, so you can’t help but tap your feet to it and sing along hence why it’s an ear worm, I know I’ve found myself singing it from time to time and annoyingly forgetting the lyrics…

But they are easy to remember:

“Doe a deer a female deer,
Ray a drop of golden sun,
Me a name I call myself
Far a long long way to go,
Sew a needle pulling thread,
tea a drink with jam and bread,
Which will bring us back to doe doe doe doe a deer…”

This song is from the 1965 film The Sound Of Music, in which Julie Andrews plays the matriarch of the Von Trapp family, it’s a classic film based on a true story.

What do you mean you haven’t seen “The Sound Of Music”?
