Track Of The Day – “Days We Left Behind” – Paul McCartney

This song is the first release from Paul McCartney’s new album “The Boys From Dungeon Lane” and it follows Paul’s ability to weave a story into a song. To me this is almost the lyrical sequel to the ever beautiful “In My Life”, given that it revisits Paul’s childhood.

There are references to war – Paul was born in 1942 so the latter half of World War II, and he sings about the sounds of war. But the thing that caught my ear was his referring to smoky bars and cheap guitars – is that a reference to when he first started playing guitar?

This talks about how things have changed, but no one can erase the memories that are left behind.

Someone said that Paul’s voice had aged and not in a good way. I have to disagree, Paul is not the man who belted out hits like Hey Jude (The adlib toward the end is just insane.) or my favourite vocal performance of his Maybe I’m Amazed. We have arrived at his 18th album and this song and indeed the album itself could be seen as a look back on his life.

Instrumentally this is stripped back, it’s acoustic led and it features a piano and bass prominently but the song lyrics tell the story.
