Single Review: “Love$ick” Bacao Rhythm And Steel Band

Bacao Rhythm And Steel Band – Love$ick

Straight off the bat I knew this track immediately… I didn’t go to the PR write up I went straight to the track, it’s my go to thing so I don’t get prejudiced by knowing who the artist is. The drums starts off the party and it’s punchy triggering off a memory in me thinking that I’d heard it before, but why is the percussion so low?

I let it pass, thinking it might just be a sample without the original parts. But then the horn stabs come in and then I’m transported back 9 years to when I first heard the original.

You see this is a cover by Mura Masa! It had me dancing, it’s like an old friend visiting. This gave me some of my best memories because it’s a track on my master playlist. I usually put this on when I go on long journeys so it made me smile.

Anyway, BRSB (No I’m not being overly familiar there’s a reason for this!), are faithful to the original and guess what?

It BANGS.

The steel pans handle the melody along with the horns and it retains the summer vibe of the original, no vocal sample on this just straight ahead rhythm and steel.

Well done!

Shrouded in mystery, hailing from Hamburg, Germany, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band (BRSB) is a collective lead by multi instrumentalist Björn Wagner. After learning the instrument during a half year stay in Trinidad & Tobago, he encorporated the tropical steel into his already sharply honed Funk, Soul, and Hip Hop sensibilities. The outcome is a twist on both the funk band and the steel band format, a truly unique sound.
