A<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> pioneer of the jazz harp, she <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">has created her<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> style through the exploration of improvisation<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">classical and electronic music<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">and h<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">er sound plumbs the depth<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of classical and jazz techniques. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Campiche<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> has performed <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">in <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">clubs and at <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">festivals <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">across Europe. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">She is curious and always seeking new musical experiences<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Collaborators <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">have <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">include<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">d<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Malcolm Braff<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Jasper <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Hoiby<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Andreas <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Schaerer<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Anders <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Jormin<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, to name <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">just<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> a few.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">With her band&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Orioxy<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, Julie toured Europe from 2008 to 2016 and released three albums <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> received positive reviews in the international press<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">After <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Orioxy<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Campiche<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">formed <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Julie <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Campiche&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Quartet<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">comprising Julie and three outstanding Swiss musicians. The quartet <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">has<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> toured more than 115 countries. They use advanced orchestral arrangements, expressive instrumentation<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and complex musical and harmonic structures. In 2020, the quartet released the album&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2018<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Onkalo<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&nbsp;inspired by a Finnish underground reservoir used to dump radioactive waste, which gave an insight into <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Campiche\u2019s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> desire to connect her music to broader societal issues.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> The quartet was selected to represent Switzerland at the 12 Points Festival in Dublin and nominated for the&nbsp;Montreux Jazz New Talent Award.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Campiche<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> also provides workshops and teache<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> at&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Elise <\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><strong>Estavoyer<\/strong>\u2019s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> harp school<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">In September 2020, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">she<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> received the&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Leenaards<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">F<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><strong>oundation<\/strong> cultural grant<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> which<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> allowed her to train <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">for <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">18 months with composers who inspired her. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">In January 2020, s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">he was one of three composers of the&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Bodycity<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&nbsp;Project<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, a multidisciplinary show in Lausanne as part of the&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Youth Olympic Games<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Campiche<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> is a <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">multi-award-winning<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> musician involved in many projects<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and this album reflects <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">her <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">didactic and multidisciplinary background. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Of music, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Campiche<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> says, \u201cFor me, being a musician is something sacred, essential<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and universal. I try to work on forgetting myself <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">create a space where I believe I can fly and share this space and connect. It is truly what I love.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\">\n<\/p><table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"s5\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s3\"><strong>\u2018You Matter\u2019<\/strong> is an <\/span><span class=\"s3\">avante-garde<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> work packed with innovation, exploration<\/span><span class=\"s3\">,<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> twists<\/span><span class=\"s3\">,<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> and turns. The power here<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">is that of not one but four musicians whose interconnectivity <\/span><span class=\"s3\">has a profound impact on<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> the music<\/span><span class=\"s3\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">Many numbers reflect compelling<\/span><span class=\"s3\">,<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> hopeful messages built around societal issues<\/span><span class=\"s3\">,<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> including climate change, the refugee crisis, patriarchy, and human identity. <\/span><span class=\"s3\">As <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Campiche<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> puts it, the message <\/span><span class=\"s3\">is <\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u201cto<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> reconnect with <\/span><span class=\"s3\">ourselves<\/span><span class=\"s3\">; with the feeling that we can impact our world; that our actions are important and meaningful. What I\u2019m trying to do as an artist is to create a link between the big and the small, the intimate and the societal. We all matter, \u2018You Matter<\/span><span class=\"s3\">,\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> so don\u2019t give up. We can all make a difference\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s7\">\u2018You Matter\u2019 <\/span><span class=\"s7\">was created over a year when the population was emerging f<\/span><span class=\"s7\">r<\/span><span class=\"s7\">om <\/span><span class=\"s7\">a<\/span><span class=\"s7\"> pandemic<\/span><span class=\"s7\">,<\/span><span class=\"s7\">which all but shut down creative outlets for live music<\/span><span class=\"s7\">. Julie <\/span><span class=\"s7\">explains,<\/span> <span class=\"s7\">\u201cI received an invitation from a festival to make a new creation<\/span><span class=\"s7\">,<\/span><span class=\"s7\"> and decided to premi\u00e8re a new repertoire with the quartet<\/span><span class=\"s7\">\u2026.<\/span><span class=\"s7\">After<\/span><span class=\"s7\"> the <\/span><span class=\"s7\">first<\/span><span class=\"s7\"> show<\/span><span class=\"s7\">,<\/span><span class=\"s7\"> we played a few concert<\/span><span class=\"s7\">s<\/span><span class=\"s7\">. It was important for me that we could play it live a few times before <\/span><span class=\"s7\">recording<\/span><span class=\"s7\">. It\u2019s like new shoes. You need time to have the perfect fit.<\/span> <span class=\"s7\">Then we went <\/span><span class=\"s7\">into<\/span><span class=\"s7\"> the studio and worked with Matthieu Michel as <\/span><span class=\"s7\">our<\/span><span class=\"s7\">musical advisor. <\/span><span class=\"s7\">He had fresh ears and guided us in <\/span><span class=\"s7\">the recording process <\/span><span class=\"s7\">so we<\/span><span class=\"s7\"> could give <\/span><span class=\"s7\">our <\/span><span class=\"s7\">best.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"s8\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"s9\">\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span class=\"s7\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2018You Matter\u2019 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s7\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">opens with \u2018<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Aquarius\u2019 a piece inspired by the story of the SOS <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Mediterrann\u00e9e<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> boat called Aquarius that rescued 30,000 migrants in the Mediterranean Sea before being detained in 2018 for political and judicial reasons<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and being <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">replaced in July 2019 by a new ship, the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2018<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Ocean Viking<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Based <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">on<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the theme of migration, there is a sense of fear and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">unknown<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">throughout<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">track. The deep, dark <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">opening <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">tones give way, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">slowly but surely<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">to a sense of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">rhythm and order<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, yet the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">feeling<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">fear<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">imbued<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">by the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">percussive st<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">r<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ings of the bass <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">is <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ever-present<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Julie says, \u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">fear can be found on many levels: the fear of people lost in the Mediterranean on boats of fortune<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of course, but also the fear of Europeans towards migrants and the political and human consequences that this generates.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">T<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">he music reflect<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> that <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">concept<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of fear \u2013 with eclectic <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">rhythms<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">only <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">settling into a pattern<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> temporarily for short phrases. There is a sense of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">never relaxing, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">constantly<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">checking and being checked with delicate spacings and stops and starts. The sax of Leo <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Funagalli<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> wrenches the heart with its mournful, searing sound deluges, backed by interweaving percussive rhythms from the drums and bass<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, the sax left on its own at <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">halfway<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> mark <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">to <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">scream<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">solo <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">into <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the ensuing <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">silence. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">A beautiful quietude follows this<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, the calm before the storm<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">perhaps<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">?<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> One<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> can envisage a moment or two of peace and calm, a discovery of serenity, and finally, a cessation of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">chaos<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. Gorgeous.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><strong><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2018<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">The Underestimated Power<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> is inspired <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">by the strength of women. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Campi<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">he<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> says, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201cAll<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the women who make the world go round behind the scenes of everyday life, in any situation and throughout human history. All the women who silently sacrifice their needs, consciously or unconsciously, by choice or necessity, for the &#8216;common good&#8217; often of their own families.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201d It is they who inspired this piece<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the ensemble capture<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> many essences of woman, from a delicacy and fragility in one<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> section <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">to a fiery, strong<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> emotive <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">strength in another; from sadness to light and laughter, there is beauty here in <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the dialogue between the musicians and between them and the listener. The harp dictates the mood changes, the swings, tempo<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> essence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, sexiness<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, laughter<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and sassiness<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> \u2013 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">all<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">voiced superbly by the sax<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, harp<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">and double bass with deep, arco lines. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">The final section i<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> powerful<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">i<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">nfused<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> with strength<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">; something<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> women are good at <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">conveying. T<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">his<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> is a wonderful track.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"><strong>\u2018Utopia\u2019<\/strong> starts like a wholesome number, gentle harp overlaid with a melody<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and underpinned by <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">soft<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> drums and strings. But before we settle into folksy loveliness, the track develops, evolves<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and takes off, becoming a<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">n energy-filled number as sounds ricochet off each other, ideas are exchanged and explored<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and the dialogue between the musicians develops. The bass solos, singing its plucked string song before the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">rest of the ensemble<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> accompany the harp and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">expand<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the number <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">along<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> even greater explorative roads. The sax is superb, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Fumagalli<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> flying <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">through the registers<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">track swings<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">one moment, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">then is <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">free and glorious the next. Another standout <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">track<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Hearing this <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">music made me curious, so I asked Julie what her harp meant to her. She told me, \u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">For me, the harp is an instrument<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. A<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">with <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">any other instrument, it isn\u2019t the goal, but an instrument that we use to play music<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">o the goal is the music.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">F<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">or me<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the harp can be used in any kind of music. In some context<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, you will have some technical specification<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> to consider, but nothing <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">is <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">unsolvable.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">And<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of course, if you want to play extremely chromatic music like bebop, it can be very hard. But again, if you work on it, you can go quite far<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> I think. It won\u2019t sound like a piano or a guitar, it will be different.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">I think the most special thing <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">about<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the harp that can make <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">it <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">hard to play in jazz or pop, or any groovy <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">music, is<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the fact that the instrument has really a lot of resonance. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">So,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> it make<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">it hard to groove. But, again, you can always find a way. It <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">just <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">takes<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> longer than for some other instrument<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> that are more <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2018<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">made for it<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">On the musicians she collaborates with here, Julie says, \u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">I worked with t<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">he musicians from the very beginning of the band.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">I wanted to play with the three of them <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">because&nbsp;I really like the way they position themselves within a musical framework. It&#8217;s not about individual performance, the music is always their priority. &nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">I met the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">three<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">musicians<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&nbsp;separately<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, and t<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">hey met for the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">fir<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">st time in this quartet. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">I<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">t<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> worked very well from the 1st&nbsp;rehearsal.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s10\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">What is striking about <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> music <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">on \u2018You Matter\u2019 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">is the interaction between the musicians.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">The harp fits perfectly into the jazz,<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">folk,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">avante-garde<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> pockets and creatively blends all three<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">adding a dose of classical just for good measure. An astounding album with so many different praiseworthy things.
