Cooper proves her depth of talent again on this C<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">hristmas release<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8216;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Darkside<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of Christmas'( Thelonious Punk records) is an <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">alternative take on the familiar deluge of yuletide projects<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">The album is a Christmas record<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> but reflects<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the current political and social environment caused by the impact of national and global events<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. Cooper is deeply empathetic to her fellow human beings, which is apparent on every track. She touches on seasonal jollities but recognizes recent global difficulties, too, and manages to imbue the emotions of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">love<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">loss<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the understanding that Christmas festivities can temporarily mask the realities of some situations. Like a gift-wrapped present, Cooper includes compassion, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">wry wit, edgy <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">humour<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and outstanding musicianship<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> in a seasonal release perfect for our time. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Cooper is gifted <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">with <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">a voice <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">unmistakable in its husky tones, packed with pathos and emotion that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> can take you on a journey from heartbreak to heavenly bliss<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> in an instant<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Along with Cooper&#8217;s individual take on Christmas carols and songs, there is poignancy when she sings &#8216;Another Day,&#8217; which is <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">dedicated to <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">her<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> best friend Claire Bonham, who unexpectedly passed away in 2020.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Cooper<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8216;s friend and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">princip<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">al<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> cellist in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, Richard Harwood, joins Cooper for the album. His <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">unrivaled<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">bowmanship<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> is intensely felt <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">i<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">n their version of <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8216;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Silent Night<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.&#8217; She also recruited <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">notable jazz musicians Andy Davies <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">( Tony Kofi, Kitty La Roar, and more) <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">and Kevin Davy <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">( Finlay <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Quaye<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, Lamb, and others) <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">on trumpets<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Liam Stevens<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> (<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Aydenne<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Simone, Liam Stevens Quartet, and more)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">and James Pearson<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> (James Pearson Trio, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Wynton<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Marsalis, Cleo Laine and more)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> on piano. Their presence enhances the recording with their individual and collective dexterity and flair<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. The <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Kings Voices Gospel Choir add<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> vibrancy and warmth<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">legendary<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> British actor Ray Winstone<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> lends his distinctive voice to some numbers, topping what proves a sumptuous seasonal feast.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\">\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Trumpet heralds Gruber and Mohr&#8217;s &#8216;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Silent Night<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8216; to open the album. Ray <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Winstone&#8217;s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> liquid tones recite Cooper&#8217;s original poem.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> &#8220;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Christmas night falls upon the darkness of the land, the blackbird crows where the brave man stands, but there in the night is an imminent light beaming down bright, yet hides where the brave man stands upon the darkness of the land<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Cooper enters with her sensu<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">al<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> rendition of the familiar carol, underpinned by Harwood&#8217;s sumptuous and richly dark &#8216;cello. Gospel<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">infused styling gives Cooper&#8217;s rich, deep vocals room to fly and the gentle, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">lilting<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> background <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">harmonies<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> from King&#8217;s Voices add to the atmosphere. The &#8216;cello solo adds a touch of the divine<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and al<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">l<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> is calm &#8211; until Cooper<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">in her inimitable manner, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">lifts the vocal intensity rising in arcs and emotive ripples over the increasingly textured vocal lines of the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">choir<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. The harmonics of the final bars are wonderful<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> with Cooper handing back to the whispering snowstorm effects and sensual trumpet song.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">George and Ira Gershwin&#8217;s &#8216;It <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Ain&#8217;t<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Necessarily So<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,&#8217;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> is delivered with all the sassiness of a <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">succubus, and the energy of a sprite. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Usu<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ally a male solo, this lady delivers <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">on <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">full throttle <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">with <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">unctuous spirituality, combining an irreverence for the words of the holy<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">book with respect to the original annotation. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">It ends with repeated bars from &#8216;Christmas Bells.&#8217; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Sportin<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8216; Life, the character who sings this song in &#8216;Porgy and Bess&#8217; might well approve.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Cooper&#8217;s original composition &#8216; Another Day&#8217; is a <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">tribute<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> to her friend Claire Bonham<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. It was written <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">after Bonham died in March 2020, shortly after seeing Cooper for New Year. The words are meaningful, the vocals poignant and packed with emotion. Underpinning the track is the beautiful &#8216;cello line and melodic piano from James Pearson. &#8216;When you walked by my window on a snowy New Year&#8217;s Day, and you smiled<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and I waved,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8216; Cooper sings, &#8216;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">how could I know there wouldn<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8216;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">t be another day?&#8217; The number is <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">profound<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ly evocative and sad, yet also there is hope<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8216;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">N<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">ext time you walk by my window, I know there will be another day, and we&#8217;ll smile<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and we&#8217;ll wave <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u2026.A<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> New Year&#8217;s day with you.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8216;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Bob Thiele and George Weiss&#8217; &#8216;What A Wonderful World&#8217; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">is preceded by<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> the clinking of glasses <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">and <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the voices of friends laughing and sharing good times before the song begins <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">with a gentle piano introduction from Liam Stevens. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Cooper duets with <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">piano, paying homage to the original song but adding her individual vocals. Stevens delivers a powerful interpretation of the melody in the second third, just past the three<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">minute mark. A great take on the song. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8216;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Darkside<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> of Christmas<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8216;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> is another Cooper original. Introduced by Winston&#8217;s <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">lightly menacing <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">rendition of her poetry again, before Cooper sings of a dark side of Christmas when the festivities and lights hide the loneliness of the street. &#8216;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">H<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">e rests on his park bench dated 1963, he prays for one last time &#8216;please save me!&#8217; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">T<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">here is a dark side of Christmas<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> but the church bells ring the truth, there is a dark side of Christmas<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> but the light comes shining through.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8221; He waits by the church door holding broken dreams; he waits for just one more chance to be redeemed. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">The <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">song&#8217;s lyrics<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">may<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> have you in tears<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> and Cooper delivers them with emotion and empathy. The poor man with regrets and needs is alone<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> while the church bells ring<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">. Andy Davis adds his trumpet voice to the song, which Kevin Davy joins, over the Kings Voices choir and ever-more complex piano, which rises in the background. A bea<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">u<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">tifully worked number packed with power and emotion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">&#8216;Run Santa Baby,&#8217; written by Cooper and Gregory MacDonald, tells of the near-panic Santa has near Christmas, to pay the rent, sort the hungry reindeer on his tail and not an elf in sight. What if Santa had 12 days to pay his rent and no money just before Christmas? Oh dear, what to do? How about a rollicking blues-infused number and singing about the situation? Ok, go! The number features some stellar guitar work <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">from Jack Parry, outstanding bluesy vocals, crazy piano, a bonkers trumpet solo packed with cheek, and the whole thing is underpinned by a steadfast rhythm, hand claps, and ends with <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Winstone&#8217;s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> reminder &#8216;Where the brave man stands.&#8217; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">This album was recorded at Abbey Road and Dean Street Studios<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">, with original artwork by the acclaimed photographer Rankin. &#8216;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">Darkside<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\"> Of Christmas&#8217; is a unique and stylish work, destined to indulge all of this year&#8217;s Scrooges and maybe a few Tiny Tim&#8217;s for good measure! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\">\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s5\"><span class=\"s3\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">This album is something different, something seasonal. Christmas is coming, the twinkling lights are glittering, and the presents are wrapped but spare a thought for your fellow man.
