Katy is singing acappella setting the standard for the album, it starts off dry, no effects then just as you don\u2019t expect it, there\u2019s some delay and reverb in there\u2026 it\u2019s a short clip with percussive elements &#8211; are you beating on your chest for the snare Katie? Hmmm\u2026. Excellent work\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sleep<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spotify Embed: Sleep\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/0LpdCm3ZEyYsGPYQkHwSWb?si=21cc831cd05c4d3e\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the song that introduced me to Katy, via the Fresh On The Net inbox. The thing I like about this is the fact that it\u2019s got some really nice bits in there, my favourite being around 2:02 where she simply sings \u201cSleep, oh, sleep\u201d over and over again\u2026 I am not being over dramatic here but it feels like I\u2019m being serenaded by a choir\u2026<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WOW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As someone who has a terrible time sleeping at night, this speaks to me a LOT. I love the offbeat beatbox, it gives it such a jazzy feel\u2026 This is by far my favourite track by Katy. I just need to go listen to it a few times\u2026<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>BRB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Head Above The Water<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spotify Embed: Head Above the Water\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/0JF5YFXHrRH7vKsc7DYved?si=f484d4c564d34b06\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I think it\u2019s worthy to note that Katy uses her voice in so many different ways while recording this album, the imagery conjured up is pretty special.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What do I mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well for one thing this song begins with her singing \u201cbah\u2019s\u201d and it sounds like droplets, like rain dropping the rhythm is slightly off like the way rain doesn\u2019t fall in time\u2026 It\u2019s musical poetry. And the use of reverb to give you the feeling of going under water is a perfect way to close it out.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Frankie Beeches<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spotify Embed: Frankley Beeches\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/6ttviIjpacz6fXjeAF0oln?si=59b30ba5c5a84831\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a short excerpt, and caught me off guard as to how short it was\u2026 it\u2019s gorgeous though!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trees<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spotify Embed: Trees\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/2Hwzo1Q5S6OsoLMkrZuOt4?si=e771586520674a0b\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing you need to know about Katy if you\u2019re following is that her lyrics and melodies are very poetic. This allows her to be introspective and conjure images vocally and lyrically\u2026<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrees give me strength\u2026\u201d this stays with me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something beautiful here.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Devil<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spotify Embed: Devil\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/5sd9BCxNz4w6zE3SsRNFGk?si=f067f2b667af4f2e\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Katy did a tutorial on this via Instagram, showing how to recreate it. I\u2019m not much of a singer nor am I a beat boxer but while she makes it sound effortless, it\u2019s hard as hell!! But you get an idea as to how this comes together, one thing I would like to say is she talks about wind and you hear wind blowing.. when she talks about the devil getting in her head there\u2019s an unnerving feeling because the sounds go through effects and swirl around you. Another piece of evidence that Katy can conjure up images easily with her words and vocals. Like I told her on Instagram\u2026<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You. Are. A. Genius.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I Have A Song<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spotify Embed: I Have a Song\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/6TChtK6aslnbeR89B8Ca9z?si=5357932b8b1543e7\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This starts off on a low note, and then builds up, what I like about Katy\u2019s songs Is that she\u2019s on point with her vocal arrangements\u2026<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other thing I like is that she isn\u2019t afraid to play around with her vocal range. This starts off low in the register of her vocals, and this is backed up with a low \u201cOhhhhh\u201d.. If I was playing this on the piano I\u2019d love being able to use the suspended fourths\u2026<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Katy goes percussive with her duh duhs\u2026 My favourite little surprise in this track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Box In The Attic<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spotify Embed: Box in the Attic\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/4VkXk6ytu63dMQ1q0Lap92?si=eaa153a6136c4be1\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Change of time signature with this\u2026. 6\/8 time, with triplets\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lyrically this is about finding pictures that conjure old memories, I\u2019m getting a glimpse into a family history here. This song ping pongs back and forth with those triplets and it just lulls me to sleep to dream of memories I haven\u2019t experienced, but seeing it through someone else\u2019s eyes\u2026 it\u2019s simply gorgeous.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Seventeen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spotify Embed: Seventeen\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/6ZptF4qtoocZNBiq8yHJ7m?si=fc242532b3a14387\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeventeen years in this town, I know the back roads and the byways better than the back of this town\u2026\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This song brings Katy\u2019s storytelling into play again. She muses about whether she belongs there, but at the same time celebrates the little things that people would probably pass over\u2026 the song starts off with percussive off beat doonga\u2019s laying the foundations for another stand out track on the album but then\u2026. before you know it, it\u2019s over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Segueing beautifully into\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Makes Me Forget<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spotify Embed: Makes Me Forget\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/3v4n09FakXEb1C5bBYEsCb?si=27aed38c6c8f4ce7\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing about this track is that the line that sticks out to me is \u201cMakes me forget that I\u2019m alone\u201d\u2026 it\u2019s a mirror reflection of \u201cSeventeen\u201d a kind of \u201cIn spite of all this\u2026 there are good things, the little things that I remember that makes this life good\u2026\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s my interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Growing Peas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spotify Embed: Growing Peas\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/64B7qgMDftxMgusAZtVCl5?si=7bcf6d18fce44d54\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cZadoo zadoo zadoo zadoo\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another vocal instrument in Katy\u2019s arsenal.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This song is another commentary on lack of sleep.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am not complaining. I feel you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So many different things to reflect on, like what\u2019s causing it, blue screens, watching disturbing news reports\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This song is almost like a confessional, like the entry in a journal, and allows Katy to talk about her life, pretty much the same way the album does as a wider body of work.
